Self-Hypnosis
Self-hypnosis can be used to help reduce anxiety in preparation for and at times when you would like to feel calm and more confident. It gives you the tools to help take positive steps towards making sure you feel happier and more stable when you need to.
Here are some ways in which you can apply self-hypnosis:
Body Scan:
Start from the top of your head and move your awareness through your body. There are a number of ways to do this. You can simply observe the body as it is, or actively encourage feelings of calm into each muscle. You can imagine the sensation of being massaged or visualise walking into water. Try also to move your awareness in different ways such as circulating around the surface of the body. You can do this when alone to aid relaxation or in social situations to help bring any anxiety down.
Creating Balance and Stability:
These three can simply be taken as metaphors to help generate a stable and composed mind when needed, or be associated with balancing deeper energies. For the best results spend a minute or so doing each one.
Purification:
Imagine a shower of water washing away all your pent up anxieties and negativities. Generate the sense that you feel cleansed and refreshed, ready to start anew. A good place to do this is while in the shower!
Grounding:
Imagine roots leaving the base of your body, going deep into the ground. Visualizing your body in earthy colours will help generate a feeling of stability and self-assurance.
Protection:
Imagine being surrounded by a blanket or pyramid of light. Get a sense that this layer is building in strength so that it cannot be penetrated by negative thoughts and emotions from others.
Getting to Sleep:
With your eyes open fix on a point and notice three things in your peripheral vision. Move your awareness between these three things several times without moving your focus away from the fixed point. Now close your eyes and listen to three sounds, moving your awareness in turn between these several times. And finally move your awareness around three points of your body, noting how it feels. Repeat these steps a few times trying to choose different sights, sounds and sensations each time. You should soon feel tired and ready to drop off for a good nights sleep!
